A Notebook

In the shiny water, two baskets flying
Two kids flip open their pencil-boxes, one yellow, one blue
Together they spring within my sight
Snowy white imprints, light white reflections
“Sister!”, when the earth has darkened and the mill’s rumble ceded
A wide-open shrieking mouth, a shock of black hair
Bright red, split in two, down to dark red
At long last are seized two very thin wrists, very disconsolate too
The blue boy with his strange big head bathing in tears
Dreaming sweet dreams in the sun, a fragile soul turning to caring arms
The lily stands up, berating me gently, her eyes slightly red
Finding back each other calms them, milk colored back packs bounce in happy excitement
Limbs of jade in early spring, skin like perilous thin ice
Nervous black eyes stumble on unknown words, “Noah’s ark bones”
She’s always a bit fever, a runny nose, dirty badly fitting clothes
Scratching words like a little chick, in the corridor a rather quiet playmate
Horsey riding in the wet grass giddup giddup, hands full of white moss

Vines intertwine jungle-wise, crowned with camellia she rushes out of the dark pine wood
The old road has become a fisherman’s light, and still beyond the queerest of rugged rocks diverge.
Rebellious somber eyes, leaning against a fragile pomegranate tree
Hu drums roost in trees at night, in the idyllic garden leaves drift over each other
Fish come surfing over the ground; whose fingers like flowers are playing on the cold wave?
Heavy rain over the countryside, the red blossoming peach trees suffer
The letter for mother is read to a green bird perched in a teahouse
A night owl glides back to the tree when a brand-new three-sitter thunders by
Fire, a new screen, mortals’ clothes whirl up
Lift our sedan-chair and rush to a three-meter-high straw scarecrow
A bunch of blushing roosters are kicked into the street
All over children blow balloons, toy spinners fly all over our heads
A girl jumps rope to school, now she steps on the whirling double strands
“Search oh search oh search”, in a circle all clap hands for two little bees
Hand in hand and softly singing they walk in line on the shady boulevard
Alien icy lips have left me like rocks
Crazy sheep jump amidst the rocks, flocks of rocks are bleating
Leaning over the waterfall I look at the stream, a piece of jade shows up rolling over the bottom of the clear creek
Over the pink peonies falls the shadow of a palace pavilion
My friend this spring sprinkling sweet olive for me, has cooled the wine flasks
Passing by the department store, notice in front of the great hall how the church is freshly decorated in white paint
Two rows of tall willows dark green and damp, from both ends of the alley a dense fog envelops us
Real children, the two of them whisper interminably in each other’s ears
