I’ve travelled this road once before
the scenery still comes clearly into view –
the tunnel, the stream and the vineyard.
The railway line has many turns
passengers get on or off as before
only these days more of them speak English.
The Appennine rain falls slanting on the windows
and time like chimney smoke floats away
only to be blown back by the wind.
Everything happens only once –
if you meet an old lover
best regard her as a recollection.
