Silent Cell Phones
In airport waiting rooms, owners of cell phones
Look wistful when their phones lie silent, millstones
That no stream turns. Mindful of their high stations,
They squirm and fidget their exasperations,
Prisoners staring at a blank cell wall,
Their fingers idle on each speechless phone.
There ought to be a number they could call
To demonstrate to us they’re not alone.
Storehouse
Whenever you’re away
I squirrel up a heap
Of unimportant news
That, still unshelled, I keep
To tell when you return
And meanwhile, since I lack
A listener in you,
Keep adding to the stack.
In days now I’ll receive
From living through our rift
Your rich gift: that you’d take
Cracked acorns for a gift.
Meeting a Friend Again After Thirty Years
Take off that mask. I know it’s you.
Those wrinkles, sunken chin,
And goggled eyes can’t quite disguise
Your wry familiar grin.
This is our mutual Halloween.
As though we mean to scare,
We face each other through a screen
Of fake teeth, whitened hair.
Out of Tune with the Stars
Our stars today foretell
A baleful horoscope:
In separate glooms to dwell,
Abandoning all hope,
But blood in us demurs.
We opt for ecstasy,
Out of tune with the stars
And well content to be.
Envoi
Go, slothful book. Just go.
Fifty years slopping around the house in your sock-feet
Sucking up to a looking-glass
Rehearsing your face. Why
Don’t you get a job?
Sing for one who will care
When words with a rhythm align.
Sing, but not contrive
Clear sense to rob.
Sing in the loosening hands
Of lovers who read late
While embers anguish underneath a grate.
Sing as your weight, abandoned then,
Crash-lands.
