Oh, sorry that I didn’t notice a group of your poems in memory of Elaine in the end of your last e-mail. I'm touched by your profound feelings toward her when I read them at the moment.I fully understand your emotions expressed in these poems. I've downloaded them for further study. You know, Jack Foley, a Californian poet, is also deeply trapped in his pain over the lost of his wife. Again, I'd like to say that it is God (or Nature)who makes an arrangement who will leave this world first or later on, indepentant of man's will. And I'd like to say that Elaine went away first, then we'll follow her sooner or later in the future. One's spiritual pain just lasts a certain period of time, and then no more.

Take care!

Vernon Frazer

Change in the Weather

joy becomes
a past tense verb
too dead
to regain a noun

or grow life
from a year-round yard of snow

no tears can ever water
enough

darkness, enough
promises

daybreak doesn’t end
the chill from just one
sunset

or grow
radiance to color darkness
brighter than the relentless shadow

that chills the blood and memory

already slashed
already shredded

the night screams a steady echo

scare reruns
turn blood back
to cold

slow the pace of fruitless journeys

from saving life
to watching empty palms in winter

Coming Home

the return
to warming promises brought
more chill than snow

record feet falling
through February

the journey home
to the welcome: empty palms
extended

sunset’s chill
to still the desperate grope
for daybreak’s
fading radiance

while the relentless
ended joy, tears, screams

its pace
colored
life shadow

Nightfall Before Noon

the scream stays silent
while the tears tell evening’s first chill

before noon

every daybreak wakes as dusk
and stays
a loom struck threading

gray with an undercoat of black

for the journey
a pace ahead

of the return of the relentless

no slashing can stop
no cold-drip can still

though the radiance persists
in a face of terror and promises
that lie about the shadow

its colors
brighter than snow
at sunset

your life turned
darkness over
my empty palm

Shortening the Future Together

slashing joy
threatened shortened daybreaks
and a hope reduced
to none

a relentless growth in an other betrays all promise

no fault their shadow screams
under tears lamenting a dark return
and the chilly palm sweat

from sunset come too soon

no journey colder
than darkness toward snow
as the color slows

pace

a radiance reflecting
past a life’s memory
shared less together

than the scare

the darkness brings inside
