Jan Siesling

Biographical  Note

Jan Laurens Siesling is an art historian and a writer of fiction and poetry.  His novels often deal with art and his books on art deal with the poetry behind artistic inspiration. He is a man of languages and in his free time he likes to do translations from one beloved language into another. Chinese is likely to become his future challenge. He was born in the Netherlands and he obtained his degrees from the Free University of Amsterdam. He lived in France for many years and most of his books were written in French. Now he spends half of the year in Europe, the other half in America. His most recent book, Art is More, is an unconventional history of Western art through the ages.

Du Ya:《River》
Jan Laurens Siesling (USA)   translation

I was twenty that spring
When I decided to look out for a river
The wide and tranquil flowing river
I believed to be my past

Since childhood I saw her time and again:
Flashes before my eyes, dreams also
Let me perceive her: a few bright seconds
Gradually fading like a shadow

On the vast earth a lonely moving river
Flowing by what moonlit nights, what bright days?
Shimmering past which hills, woods or villages?
Carrying what year or month away - never to come back?

Clear and forever vanishing river: I didn’t find her
That spring, walking along the endless banks of endless
Rivers… they were not my vanished past:
Not one knew the dark waters of my lonesome life

Warm waves glowing, quietly flowing
Mimicking the moonlight of life foregone, as if home,
But ephemeral reappearances they were
And my repeated approaches had the distance grow.

Time made the years go by: from twenty to this spring
It opened my eyes to see that I am two:
One, in the world, awake or asleep, reading or writing,
The other, along a faraway riverside, still walking

《Sounds of Spring》
Poet: Du Ya
Translation: Jan Laurens Siesling

I remember it happened in March, cloudless and
Light was the morning, some wild flowers had begun
To bloom at the roadside, some migrant birds
Were already flying in

Over the field the wind was blowing. Father and I
Had gone out for a long stroll. We walked on the road
That year I was five, over the fields
The wind was blowing

I held Father’s hand, upwards we went
Where rows of poplars stood     and small shrubs too
An endless slope. We walked along the high way
Slowly approaching the top     walking.

I heard     sounds     from the north side
They came, gently
Getting closer to the trees
Now I heard the fluttering of flags in the wind

Whoo-la-la said the flag flapping
And then     someone had to be crying “ah ah”
Twice, and again twice crying, in that voice was
Sadness, because no one was about to respond

That morning, some migrant birds
Flying here and there, over the fields
A brisk wind blowing. On the slope of the hill
No one but me and my father

Bewondered I looked around at the top, void, no one there, my heart
Was full of unspeakable sadness     and     fear
That year I was five, I didn’t know yet the sound
Of spring, neither the sound of spring and death

There had to be a mysterious connection
I felt Father also heard that sound
I felt he clasped my hand more tightly
Toward the summit in silence     walking

Whoo-la-la said the flag flapping, “ah, ah”
The long cries, not a soul ever responding
Sadness, for years to come, with me
I couldn’t lift a single foot.

Later I turned my head, to see if really
There was a flag, if really there was a human soul
Softly and sadly crying
At that moment I found, we had already walked down the slope

Dear Du Ya,
Thank you for your nice (and poetic words).
You were lucky to be born in the middle of beautiful nature. I was born in a city in the Netherlands. In this country no forests but meadows, no mountains but flat lands, no blue but a cloudy sky, no sun but rain. Still I love my old country ! and when I come back I love the rivers most, wide and majestic, in the wind under the grey sky. They make you feel small and humble but happy to be part of life.
Jan

Dear Du Ya,
Thank you for your season's greetings.
We also pray for the world.
We looked at the ocean and its wild waves.
We listened to the angel's words in the beautiful music of J.S.Bach: Christmas Oratorio.
It says: peace to humanity!
All our friends and family came to our minds. You were one of them.
Haiyan and Jan
