Jan Siesling

Biographical Note

Jan Laurens Siesling is an art historian and a writer of fiction and poetry.  His novels often deal with art and his books on art deal with the poetry behind artistic inspiration. He is a man of languages and in his free time he likes to do translations from one beloved language into another. Chinese is likely to become his future challenge. He was born in the Netherlands and he obtained his degrees from the Free University of Amsterdam. He lived in France for many years and most of his books were written in French. Now he spends half of the year in Europe, the other half in America. His most recent book, Art is More, is an unconventional history of Western art through the ages.

《Fish Ponds 》

    By Bei Du
The free translation is proposed by Jan Siesling (April 2015).

Clouds set their silver teeth in the blue Heaven,
seizing the muddy body of Earth in their grip,
When Tiao Nuó the God* came, striding through the air:
for him no mountains high or valleys deep;
Spirits lit up in the dark, luring,
but clad in his bronze colored feathers, his will was unbroken,
Rushing toward the Earth, somber like the darkest pool.
Now squatting, now kneeling, now flowing is the God,
a drop penetrating the glistening stem of green algae,
Now becoming the source of life abundant,
rapidly debouching, birthing, according to his plan,
Adopting equality as his truest value
In the realm plants and animals ought to share to survive.
Quagmire still covered the future theater of combat,
The water surface lay, stainless like steel, offered to the thunderbolts,
The evolution of societies sat at one’s fingertips,
caressing the face of the Earth,
A spark of electricity would eject the oil to generate a body of cells
from the mass of the origin;
Impatiently waited for, the finest particles in the water united with soil
Had finally formed the first forms of life;
These were cast in multifarious fish whose lives were fixed
within the boundaries of Earth itself –– ––
They belonged to the oceanic domain, deep green waters to swim in,
Moving about as free as the shuttle in the weaver’s loom;
Happy they seemed, in their element between Heaven and Earth,
(When the King comes, will they be happy still?)
The great pond was their protection, no rain,
No whirling wind striking the water could harm them,
Pure poetry, every nerve cell of every fish,
Up they went, and down, living in two worlds at the time,
Real and unreal, beings of body and mind, living in freedom.
Freedom had such a wonderful flavor. But with Time
Class imposes itself: Already there is a King amongst them.
From the muddy waters of royal devotion, the fish scatter
Into the dark valleys of the deep, fleeing the sound of their own breath,
Adjusting it to the lowest frequency, because all around
Heavy Fish parade (call it Cat Fish, or Sharks).
Small fish fill the respected stomach of the big!
No such thing was known in the world of yesteryear!
Now the water itself seems to breathe in eerie ways,
Strange noises that sound like a quest for freedom and survival –– ––
Some little fish and shrimp wonder about the new state, their minds wander,
Chaos threatens to take over in the universe of ponds.
The realm is apparently peaceful. Do the little ones
Seek the protection and blessing of Nuó the God?
Do they hanker for a new plumage in a new pond, verily?
Who does not wish to be big fish in the struggle for life?
Who‘d not spend great effort and achievement to offer free space to the children?
All aspire to grow and to combat the injustice from the beginning
And to belong to the great, in control of the space.
Meanwhile the surface of the water at sudden moments gets startled and
Sharp foaming ripples sweep in waves from one end of the pond to the other,
Frightening from the fish point of view;
The quiet verdant waters change into cataracts and all must swim
in endless zones of unpredictable deluge.
All sorts of objects are ripped off in the furor and
float upward from the bottom to the surface,
Clouds of black substance form at ground level and baffle life in the green pond,
It is the rain of madness reigning in the world of profit outside there,
Pumping the darkest dirt into its own waters.
Almighty God Nuó, art thou asleep? Wake up!
Already the poorest fish have fled the polluted turmoil,
Which is flipping their arena upside down. Their white belly is the protest
Against the unequal battle for life or death, the complaint reaches out
beyond the pond: bitter ocean!
Listen to the soul, emerging from the unrest when the night comes with rain,
Riding the lightning to a new universe, attached still to the Earth, but
Where fish ponds open in the dark like white flowers blossoming, silently
Signaling grace and dignity. Ponds of the Earth,
Expanding their green lagoons, absorbing the deep blue sky:
Yearning for wings, this is our unchanged prayer, O Tiao Nuó,
Under the sun, the warm rays of which will chase the menacing clouds,
Entrust the guidance of the ponds to the power of freedom and equality.

                      2015.2

—————
* The swiftly moving God Nuó acts as the protector of the countryside against the spreading of evil and disease by sinister spirits.

《Ping Ding Shan》 (“Flat Top Mountain”)

Starting at the broad and straight new North End Bridge in the Xinhua high way,
Go once by foot to the Ping Ding Shan and climb it: the mountain is not that high.

A dark grain asphalt road takes off at the foot of a hill
And seems from there to flutter in the air like a long black banner

Winding upward in the fresh breeze; and however flat,
You will need endurance to reach the upper plateau.

Pine trees stand upright as proud guardians over the tombs,
Scattered on either side of the road; how they lend dignity to the mountain.

Long years ago a god from up high must have slashed its hat; no doubt
Long years of suffering have worn away its upper body,

And turned it into clouds, freely moving in the sky,
But the people lived under the mountain, a sweet or bitter life.

The lower body sits quietly south of the Ru River – it blocks off
The freezing northern storms that merciless invade the habitat of millions.

Today few trees grow on this body signed by the scars
The movements of the terrestrial crust left, its skull is bald.

Each cube of basalt hollowing out the steps is witness of the toil of the workers,
Year after year, like dragon scales leading to the peak of the mountain.

From the hill we overlook the town, its new buildings pierce through the haze,
Coal City’s tortuous history is underground, behind the curtain of a grey blue sky.

What is the door like opening over there? A narrow unpaved road
That cuts deep into the spacious clean plateau --

Ping Ding Shan, November 10, 2014,

组成黑色的水底云雾,迷乱了绿色的水塘;
