He is a man of languages and in his free time he likes to do translations from one beloved language into another. Chinese is likely to become his future challenge. He was born in the Netherlands and he obtained his degrees from the Free University of Amsterdam. He lived in France for many years and most of his books were written in French. Now he spends half of the year in Europe, the other half in America. His most recent book, Art is More, is an unconventional history of Western art through the ages.

Ou-Yang Guan Xue(China):《Little Island》
Jan Laurens Siesling (USA)   translation

She radiates: the island is hers,
a dream, suddenly rising above the mist of life.
Amidst fresh flowers in undulating grasses
an island emerges from a childhood in the North.

Like in a dream a midnight alley abandoned by man,
this is her private paradise, a fairy tale
island, where she lives on her own:
Oh happy, simple, fairy tale youth.

One day she falls asleep in the air of the salty sea.
A silent ship sails along
and carries her to a city bursting of sound.
She is little. And little island floats away.

Now there is no way back anymore.
Little island has even lost its name.
In deep sleep little island drops by in tears,
when, grown up, deception is her lot under the sun,
when happy, memories begin to recover.

All women have an island in their heart, all men,
one that no other can explore,
one that no other should disturb.
Because when pain comes, ignored by all,
it is here they wish to hide.

In the middle of life she decided to look for
remains of little island. All was gone,
all gone in flooding and erosion. In her heart
she started an island that will stay. Ships will sail here
with yellow sails, coconut palms grow on its shore.

For sailors from far she will be the lighthouse
of her imaginary little island.
She will light a path in the air
leading from the busy city to the vast sea,
and in the vast sea forever a little island.

Ou-Yang Guan Xue:《To Siesling
Translation: J.L.Siesling,  November 5, 2016

The widest ocean sat between us, you translated “Little Island”,
My "Little Island" flew over islands numberless.

You had eyes as Dutch tulips,
Legs like the flamingo,
You, wanderer with the white clouds, had come to China from America,
Showed up at Baofeng, Pingdingshan West Station,
Your smile, windmill like, embraced us.

You came as the surveyor, to draw a picture of Henan,
With your energy get the measure of the province, fly over it
Recording every view of Henan that entered your lens.
Here you were, Siesling, at the elegant hand of Dr. Tian.

It was raining in Lushan Xiatang, so we hung out on the balcony,
Staying away from the iron work railing, rain and fog steamed over the plains
And while frogs in the mist of a bamboo forest were singing hymns like in a temple,
We recited poems, same poems different languages.
We debated North Korea and the War, same story
Different readings in the US and China, before our conversation rejoined
The hot springs of Lushan, lukewarm droplets floating in the air.

Then the discussion embarked on “Art is More”, the book Mrs. Tian
Called the true voice of Europe, and the song of your heart;
When the terrace bathed in twilight colors, dusk made our talking
Freshly enter into the rainy night. A Guci drummer said his song,
Copper cymbals deepened our recognition of two realms. You
Brought a compelling set of slides, views of Western art,
Placing at its summit the stained glass;
We stood in awe at the art of the craftsmen, the secrets of oil paint,
How you explained the European perspective and its aesthetics.

In the Henan Museum the bronzes came alive, well observed
Time slowed down, China tea, calligraphy, narrative bricks from the Han dynasty,
All shone a light on the European way of thought. Suddenly
You mounted a huge silver bird and flew away from China,
And ancient China, the giant ancient magnet, now
Slowly turns around to attract massive quantities of iron.

   Dear Ou Yang Guan Xue,

Thank you for your nice words.
I am not sure that the bridge between China and the West is as yet finished, but I am happily surprised that so many people have opened the web page and read your poem Little Island. It is good to see that poetry appeals to so many readers in your country.
