河水那缓缓的令人宽心的畅流，
当它洄旋在古老的石滩
碛原，证实着历时有一种量度。

原木踞前，浮冰夺路，这洪水
不属于圣经，而是我们的通用祈祷文中
一个地方性的章节；那汩汩的

语声，如同礼拜，涌向浮华的空气，
就像那潜流推动水面的波涛
然后又把它卷入自身，

形成一道清晰的螺旋，一束流动的时间。
那天我们在大桥上从尽头走到尽头，
我们伫立其上，一种字面的凌驾，

而我在想，往下跳又会怎样，
能不能卷起身体就像一小片秋叶

在上层结构的每一根钢梁上流传，

　　上层结构。上层结构，superstructure，一般指桥面以上的承重结构，即“钢梁”、“桁架”，另通“上层建筑”。

　　力不能及的呼号，a calling just out of reach，本义指向有效范围之外发出的电子信号。

　　奔流，意译，原文为ravel(ed)，同时有纠缠和解脱的意思。

　　投身，意译，原文为claim(ing)，指以所有权为根据或目的的索求、认领、申报、声言等。

The Saint John River at Friedericton

Ross Leckie


The slow reassuring ease of the water
as it loops around the ancient stone
pediments confirms a measure of duration.

The jam of logs, scramble of ice, the floods
are not Biblical, but a local passage
in our book of common prayers; the mumble

of voices, liturgical, flows into turgid air
the way the undercurrents push to a swell
of surface and fold in on themselves
in a threaded twist, a skein of liquid time.
That day we walked the bridge from end to end
we stood above it, a literal transcendence,

and I thought of what it would be to jump,
to fold the body like a single autumn leaf
and flicker downward through the overlapping

whispers of the past. The starlings chattered
from beam to beam in the superstructure,
a calling just out of reach, girders the colour

of roof beams after a fire. The water raveled,
but I froze the motion by claiming one swirl
and following it as far as the eye could travel.
