A County Town in the Midday Sun

It was a county town,
And the bus would always turn up
At the next noon,
While I was standing on the balcony, smoking or in a trance.
It was indeed a county town
In the spring of 1990,
Surrounded by mountains, extremely peaceful.
And she was downstairs in the shadow,
Singing, chewing a betelnut.

Long time ago, when the high school
Of the town was emptied in the midday sun,
She would raise her head
To have a look at the motionless national flag, and me,
While the cramped street
Lay there leisurely.
And the radio was playing an old song:
"Then you - follow me, please."
"Follow me,"
She parroted in a low tone, still downstairs in the shadow.
This was the last midday
That belonged to us.

I bent down towards her,
Meeting the brownish dust flying up
Over the county town.
It was extremely peaceful
At this very moment,
The same way as we had been living all the time.
At night, she and I had nothing to say.
Nobody would be there except for us
On the balcony with a balustrade.
In the stove was always burning a pile of briquettes,
And the radio was always sending out "the Last Shot,"
She held me in her arms, watching the buses pass by,
And singing softly: “Tomorrow, it will come tomorrow.”

And came a blast of wind,
And I said nothing,
I wrote in a poem.
