. but surely the dead must walk again.
They stroll most oddly in and out of
small corners of your being, optical blips.
They go with an awkward gait, like foreign changelings
through the edges of a crowd or down the block.

It is at random seasons when the mind
is full at ease that my father, roundshouldered,
shuffles along to wait for lights to change
or my tall son shambles down the footpath
in a woollen cap, relentlessly unfashionable
and quiet as a cloud.
                              What do they want?
Can they be translated?

Space-time is no longer their medium; they inhabit
antipodes of the radiant fair dinkum,
post-Heisenberg, transphysical, post-Planck,
taunting us all with quips of antimatter.
They are black holes punched in the modern world.
They have been resurrection.
                                   They are Dreaming
and we the dream they paint their names across
in grey and lavender and thunderblue,
photocopies of Krishna passing
by Lasseter’s reef; or somebody
behind us on the back road to Emmaus,
footsteps in the dusk.
                               I would not have it
any other way.
                     They walk on by.
